Firefighter John Roller

Fallen Hero John Roller

Brewerton Fire Department

Date of Death: November 18, 1987

John Roller joined the Brewerton Fire Department in August 1986 at just 16 years old, proudly following in the footsteps of his father, George. Though limited by age, he completed the Essentials of Firefighting course within his first year and devoted every free moment to learning, training, and serving alongside his fellow firefighters. On November 18, 1987, John lost his life in the line of duty. When fire engulfed his family’s home, he responded to the alarm—only to discover it was his own residence. Without hesitation, he entered the burning structure to help his mother rescue his siblings, Tom and Maria, ensuring their survival. He then attempted to save his brother Daniel but tragically succumbed to smoke before he could reach him. Following a full investigation, the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board formally recognized John’s passing as a Line of Duty Death, confirming that his selfless actions were taken while actively responding to a fire.
