Fireman George McDermott was pinned beneath the six‑ton engine while responding to a fire, suffering catastrophic injuries when the suction‑hose holder penetrated his right chest. He died from the injuries sustained in the line of duty. At the time of the incident, he was serving as the acting driver for Engine Company No. 3.
