Firefighter Frank Porpiglio, Jr.
Syracuse Fire Department
Date of Death: April 9, 1978
On April 9, 1978, Syracuse firefighters responded to a structure fire at 701 University Avenue, the deadliest single day in the department’s modern history. Firefighters entered the building to search for students believed to be trapped. While operating in the third‑floor attic, a concealed sprinkler system above a false ceiling activated under extreme heat, releasing scalding steam and boiling water that rapidly worsened conditions and trapped the crews. Despite aggressive rescue efforts, four firefighters—including Frank Porpiglio Jr.—succumbed to smoke inhalation and extreme thermal conditions. It was later determined that all students had already safely evacuated. The tragedy led to significant local and national changes in student‑housing fire codes and firefighting safety procedures.
