Patrolman Andrew W. Wolfrom
Syracuse Police Department
Date of Death: February 1, 1937
On Saturday, August 22, 1936, Patrolman Andrew W. Wolfrom was assigned to a strike detail at the Remington Rand plant on Gifford Street. By 11:00 A.M., approximately 1,000 strikers and onlookers had gathered as replacement workers began leaving the plant and heading for their cars. Between 200 and 300 angry strikers launched an attack on the replacement workers with rocks, bricks, and clubs. Patrolman William Brody attempted to disperse the crowd but was immediately attacked. Patrolman Andrew Wolfrom went to Brody’s aid and was also savagely assaulted. Both officers were seriously injured and rushed to the hospital. Wolfrom sustained the most severe injuries, including a fractured skull, broken ribs, and kidney damage. He was treated for serious internal injuries and was unable to return to duty until the following October. Patrolman Wolfrom’s condition steadily declined, and he died of his injuries on February 1, 1937.
